Tampa Bay, Florida

Well-known for tourism, Florida has fast become a leader for high-technology businesses. Photonics businesses are emerging as one of the fastest growing segments, or clusters, in Florida's high-tech marketplace. The photonics industry had its beginnings in Florida during the 1950s when Martin Marietta developed early laser systems. Today, with more than 150 companies comprising some of the country's largest optics integrators and end users, Florida's photonics industry is now among the top four photonics regions in the nation. The concentration of these businesses is so great that Business Facilities magazine ranks Florida third nationally as the best location for growth in high-tech companies, with an industry projected to grow by 25 percent through 2005.

Beyond the world of business lies a rich lifestyle. Sunshine and beaches are only the beginning of all Florida has to offer. With year-round recreation and endless living opportunities, it is little wonder so many people choose Florida as their home.
The University of Central Florida (UCF) and University of South Florida are two of the six state universities that offer a photonics curriculum. UCF's Center for Research and Education in Optics and Lasers (CREOL), one of only three independent optics departments in the United States, serves as a center of excellence in research and education for the photonics industry.
